How often have you tried to accomplish a goal, whether it is learning a new skill in data and analytics or trying your hand at a new fitness routine, only to fall short of what you wanted to accomplish? When you fell short, did you do a true assessment of what happened? Did you lean in and hold yourself accountable? Did you have an honest conversation with yourself on what went wrong?
I bet most of us have goals, ideas, things we want to accomplish, and then as time goes on, we aren’t realizing those goals and accomplishments. I know I consistently am not hitting things I want to hit. Am I moving forward and progressing? Yes, but is it in a manner that is consistent with my ideals, values, goals, and vision? I have many things I want to accomplish and thoughts, maybe you can call them goals, but I am falling short. I need to utilize the three-headed monster of routine, consistency, and discipline. If I am doing these things, I can accomplish more and in the direction I want to go vs doing good things and arriving….well, somewhere.
Think about traveling down a road and wanting to get somewhere, but not having a map (yes, an old school map), directions, or your phone to help. It is 300 miles away. Will you get there? Maybe, but what if you had the things to get you there and you followed them, how much easier is it to know you will arrive at your destination? Could there be bumps along the way? Yes, and in life, there almost certainly will be. But, if you follow what you need to and are consistent about it, you will probably have more success. Let’s not leave our destiny, careers, goals, vision to chance. Let’s utilize the power of routine, discipline, and consistency.
